One Ray: Naerata Ometi’s New Way to Give, Supported by Wallester

naerata ometi

There’s a common little standoff before almost every celebration. Someone asks what you’d like as a gift, and the honest answer is usually nothing you really need. Multiply that across a birthday, a wedding, and a company anniversary, and what you get is a significant amount of goodwill that ends up spent on things that gather dust.

Naerata Ometi, the Estonian NGO Wallester has supported for years, has just built something that turns that awkward question into a far better one. It’s called One Ray, and as the organisation’s main supporter, we were glad to hear about it first. We’re also more than happy to help share it.

The idea is simple and lovely. You create your own “sun,” and instead of gifts, you ask friends or partners to light a ray on it.

Every lit ray is a donation to a real Naerata Ometi project, and the giver’s name, along with their greeting if they wish, stays on the sun for everyone to see. In short, a gift and a good deed in a single click.

How One Ray Works

The whole thing runs on one link and takes about two minutes to set up.

You start by creating the sun: a name, a date, how many rays you’re hoping for, and the project the donations will support. The page is ready straight away, with one link to share and a private one to make changes later.

Then, you share that link wherever the invitation lives, on a card, on social media, in a message. And then friends light the rays, one click at a time, each one a donation and a greeting gathered on the same page. It is fully self-service and works in Estonian, English, and Russian.

Where the Money Goes

What makes One Ray work is that a ray is never abstract. You set the price, usually 10–25 euros for a personal celebration, and each ray covers part of a real project.

For example:

  • Nine rays, 135 euros, give 12-year-old Riho a month of football, cycling, and drama club, exactly the sum his mother was short of.
  • Thirty-four rays, 510 euros, buy a new stove for Eeva and Einar, an elderly couple in Läänemaa whose old one was condemned before winter.
  • Sixty-seven rays cover the full builder’s fee for 71-year-old Maie’s bathroom and ramps.

There are several active projects at any time, and you choose which one your sun supports. Donations are tax-deductible, and every euro goes to the costs of the chosen project.

For Companies, Too

One Ray works just as well for a company anniversary or a client day, which is where we think it could appeal to businesses in our own network. A company can add its logo to the sun, put its own link on an invitation, and let each partner give what they choose.

At a client event, a QR code on the table and the sun on the screen quietly turn a room of guests into a finished project, with a donation confirmation for the tax return. For any company still ordering the usual branded gifts, it’s a warmer story to tell.

A Word on Naerata Ometi

Naerata Ometi has worked this way for eighteen years, with more than 500 completed projects since 2009 and public annual reports every year without a gap. Supporting it is part of Wallester’s wider commitment to the communities we’re part of, and this is exactly the kind of practical, local good we’re glad to help make possible.
